National Kite Day and the official opening to the Annual Cherry Blossom Festival

The trip officially starts tomorrow - so many of us are now here, in town, ready to live it up! And what better time to do this than today - National Kite Festival day!

There were kites EVERYWHERE in the place known as the "mall" - the huge stretch of grass from Capitol Hill all the way down to the memorials. And that stretch was packed today with families bearing kites ...

... even the area where the reflecting pool (remember the scene from Forrest Gump?) was was full of kites, tents, and announcements - including a PA message repeating "in case of lightning, do NOT use kites!" ...!

As for me and Keith (and later Pete; and then even later, Ryan/Taylor/Steve/Gavin/Jamie - and Jamie's friends), we were there to see the cherry blossoms! Resulting in a number of weird photos such as this one.

There was lots of dancing to celebrate the festival, such as this Indian troupe ...

... And, having walked around all day, we finished it with a visit to the Holocaust Museum (which is amazing, really well put togther), and the Museum of National History, which boasted a great view of the sunset ...

... and that was about it - it shut early today?!! So we went and saw a movie about Washington DC instead ("Thank You For Smoking") - which sure whetted our appetites for the trip ahead!
